Seeking Communications Intern – Fall 2011
The Grand Rapids Area Coalition to End Homelessness and the Roofs to Roots Campaign are seeking a qualified, energetic, and driven Communications Intern beginning September 2011.

The Coalition is a community collaborative of 60 Core Partner organizations and 250 stakeholders that are actively involved in systems change to reframe our community’s response to homelessness. We have a ten year plan, the Vision to End Homelessness, Kent County, MI, released in 2006, which guides our work. Given the large number of partners and stakeholders in this work – from elected officials at all levels, community leaders, business CEO’s, faith representatives, non profit executives, housing developers, government, consumers of service, and more – we need to maintain regular, up-to-date and relevant communications for the numerous audiences that interface (or could interface) with the issue of ending homelessness, and/or the housing and homeless system directly.
We are seeking a qualified person with passion and skills for the following activities:
- Manage, update and evolve content on the Coalition’s website www.roofstoroots.org
- Manage, update and engage with stakeholders via Facebook (Grand Rapids Area Coalition to End Homelessness), Twitter (@RoofstoRoots) and other sites as appropriate
- Weekly email newsletter/updates to stakeholders
- Produce regular Advocacy Alerts
- Assistance with event planning
- Development of presentations, power points, Prezi’s, etc.
- Participate in development of community awareness phase of Roofs to Roots campaign
- Other communications related activities as appropriate
Qualifications:
- Have or seeking degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or relevant field
- Skilled writer, editor or creator of content
- Demonstrated skills in and knowledge of communications theory, social media, online protocol, and media relations
- Skilled at development of presentations, community relations and knowledge of advocacy strategies
- Understanding of how to deliver consistent message to multiple audiences effectively
- Organized, timely, consistent, and flexible
- Willing to conduct research on content and presentation styles to ensure effectiveness of applications
- Understanding and/or experience with participating in community-level communications campaign
- Actively engaged in community through volunteering, serving on board(s), class projects, etc.
- Passionate about messaging and creating platforms to communicate about ending homelessness, affordable housing and related essential needs
Duration: We are seeking at least a six month commitment to the position; ideally one year (9-12 months)
